Home | catalogue | feedback | award-winning appliqué | links Helen Godden From as early as I can remember, I have always painted, designed, drawn, played with fabrics and most importantly, colour! A constant in my life has been the need to be creative and design on a daily basis. My mind is constantly thinking design and colours and creating images in my head that have to be let flow from the imagination to the paper. At age 21, straight from University, I opened a ladies fashion boutique where I designed and created all the hand painted and appliqued fashions and costume jewellery. “Gumleaf Clothing” in Canberra Australia was a successful adventure for 12 years. Although I painted and appliqued all day for work, I still enjoyed my home studio for acrylics, watercolour and pastel and often completed commission work too. Then after 13 years of marriage, the arrival of our daughter Ineka was my next major challenge, so I retired from business and entered Motherhood! Then, only 2 years ago, my parents decided to make the big move from Sydney to Canberra and with mum came her patchwork fabric stash. Now I have to admit to deliberately resisting the urge to get “into” patchwork but after their settling in, mum and I decided to work together on a new bed quilt for their home. I loved the design process and had endless applique ideas and suggestion of colour. The stash had lured me and I could not stop the flow of ideas. Luckily Mum had all the sewing skills to complete my vision. The snowball effect followed; the Award Winning quilt was created, then requests for the pattern of my original design started and constant inquiries of……. And what else do you do??? So now I can show you… I no longer resist the “urge” and have completely succumbed to the stash and its lure and with mums guidance, have fine tuned my sewing and applique skills. I even openly admit to others, and myself that I am a quilter; an applique designer!. So I am back in business, designing, creating, playing with colours and ideas, and having lots of fun along the way. An added bonus for me is when other quilters enjoy what I enjoy too and I see one of my designs in some one else’s loving stitches and colours…….that is a true reward. The ideas are always overflowing as I enjoy my new medium which
